Research Into The Conventions of Music Magazines- Contents Pages

Contents Pages
I have looked five different content pages.
I have looked at these content pages to get inspiration and a better idea of what my content page should look like. I have used two magazines that relates to the genre of music I like.
They are VIBE and XXL.
I will be looking at the layout and the amount of images that are included in the content pages.
This is something that I would've like to have improved from my previous task.

     First Magazine- XXL
The main image used is a picture of Dr. Dre standing on the left side of the page with his thumbs placed inside his pockets.
He is wearing all black clothing which compliments the dull grey background. The camera angle is low, as a result of this a shadow is produced behind Dr. Dre.
Dr. Dre is a well known producer and artist, he is also known for being a member for hip hop group NWA,  because of this it will guarantee sales due to his status in the music industry,
Dr. Dre 's body language and posture shows that he is very calm but confident this can be shown through the camera angle that has been used.
The colour scheme that has been used consist of dark colours such as grey, black, white and red.
This is simple but very effective.
The use of the fast forward symbol lets the reader know that their is much more information on the next page.
This symbol is effective because it is a feature that appeals to the young audience.
The camera angle is shown at a low angle and the lighting is used to create a shadow in the background that is bigger than Dr. Dre himself.
This could be used to represent his status and reputation as they are much bigger than him and he'll be known and respected for it.
The shadow doesn't take any attention away from the artist.
The layout that is used in this XXL magazine is a simple layout that is still effective.
The features are listed on the right side of the page which takes up most of the page.
By doing this the reader will see what is featured in this magazine as well as the exclusive stories that was shown on the front cover.
This will make the audience feel like they are getting their money's worth.
The layout used moves chronologically down the right side of the page using sub headings and numbers.
Their is a thick black line that separates this information from the rest of the contents.
The name of the magazine is XXL and it is in white bold which stands out in front of the dull grey background
The heading for this contents page is positioned on the top of the page, the font has been increased to become the biggest text on the page.
By having the masthead font the biggest on the page it draws the readers attention

Second Magazine- Q
The Q logo is in a small font suggesting that it is so well known that it doesn't to be in a big font.
It is followed by the word CONTENTS In capital letters so the reader knows exactly what the page is for and what is included in the magazine that has been purchased.
It shows the main articles that will be featured in the magazine.
The sub headings grabs the audiences attention by the way each heading is phrased which makes it sound exclusive and exciting.
It makes the reader as if they are getting information that cannot be accessed anywhere else.
"140 songs to download now" attracts the audiences attention.
It stands out on the page which will cause the reader to want to flick to that page.
Some of the language that is used would seem informal and rude however the magazine is aimed at a older target audience which makes it appropriate. This will make the reader feel more comfortable and enjoy reading the magazine more.
The layout of the magazine is very organised and structured very well.  It is clear to read and easy to understand which would appeal to the audience because it allows them to quickly and easily see issue that has been produced is related to their music genre.
The colour scheme is simple and it is the traditional Q colours.
This could suggest that Q magazine is very basic, this could also suit their target audience of young adults who are interested in music.
Page 48 is in bold and has been enlarged so that it is easy to identify that this is the main article and i it will allow the audience to flick to that page quickly.
The main image that has been used is a extreme close up of Lana Del Ray.
It shows her staring at the camera as if she is staring at the audience.
An issue number has been included on the top of the contents page telling the audience that Q has published 207 magazines.
This shows us that its is a very successful magazine.

Third Magazine- VIBE

VIBE has included the magazine logo into the background which works on promoting the brand identity, this logo also helps bring everything on the page together.
The V also draws attention to that section of the page and takes attention away from the actual contents.
The black and white image implies a retro style and attracts the audiences attention by the female taking Kanye's heart.
The main image that is used in this contents page is a medium shot of Kanye West.
From the medium shot of Kanye West the audience can see that Kanye is depressed which shows that his heart may of been broken.
The masthead of this contents page is 'Contents'.
This would normally be seen as the boring part of the magazine mostly because of the least amount of information that is included however the way the words are broken down makes it unique to this magazine.
This can be seen as a trademark design for the contents page of VIBE.
The content itself is quite vague however the font that is used is fancy, It looks as if it was hand writing which allows the reader to think the magazine was written for that one person.
VIBE magazine also has a section in the magazine for fashion
Fourth Magazine- NME
NME logo has been included in the masthead followed by 'this week' which suggest that it is a well established and successful magazine.
NME is red with a white borderline going around it.
By having the logo there it helps create brand identity for NME
On the left of the magazine is a band index which list all of the bands that are featured in the magazine and what page the reader can find them on.
I think this was a good idea because it allows the reader to pick out their favorite artist quickly with out any problems. It simple but very effective, it is also very easy to understand.
The band name has been written in red which stands out in front of the white background and the page numbers are also in bold.
Each item on the right side of the magazine has been placed in different categories which allows the reader to easily identify the different sections of the magazine.
The main image that has been used is a picture of Kasabian.
The picture shows Kasabian performing live in a church.
It seems as if the image has been taken from a person in crowd which may make the reader feel more involved with what is going on.
Below the main image is a small article that is not normally used on contents pages.
It is a small paragraph that is describing what is happening in the main image.
In the bottom left of the magazine NME has included a promotional deal that will cause people to subscribe to their magazine.
The colour scheme that has been used is white, red and black, these colours are commonly used in magazines.
Graphic has been used which appeal to the target audience and makes the magazine feel more modern.
